Hisago Tei

If you are looking to try some Japanese cuisine while in Kamakura, you might want to visit Hisago Tei and sample their delicious tofu and kaiseki dishes.  Kaiseki is a traditional style of dining with the emphasis on seasonal ingredients, where dishes are displayed as objects d’art before the guest.  Hisago Tei offers several lunch and dinner courses, but is renown for its tofu and yuba (tofu skin) dishes.

The meals are served in a very charming 100-year-old home just behind Hokaiji Temple. Most of the tables give visitors a view of the luscious garden.  Hisago Tei’s ‘okami’ (hostess) also decorates the rooms with fresh flowers and artworks that reflect the season, and always greets her guests with a warm smile.

Dinners are reservation only, but lunches allow for walk-ins as well.  The meals are by course only, and each course offers a number of tasty dishes, along with miso soup, sesame rice, and dessert.  The dishes change seasonally, as fresh ingredients become available and are mostly vegetable and fish based.

If you are less adventurous when it comes to eating, try the Yuba Lunch Course which has a smaller number of dishes and a modest price, and will introduce you to the world of Kaiseki (only 10 sets are available each lunch, so you might want to reserve).  Sets for children are also available.
