Hachimangu Bonbori Festival Aug 6 – 9th

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu will hold its yearly lantern festival on August 6th through 9th. This is one of the summer’s most enjoyable events, with hundreds of paper lanterns, many drawn by local artists and celebrities, displayed on the long approach to the shrine.

A ritual to mark the end of summer will be held at 3pm on the 6th, followed by tea services, tanka poems, a brass band performance, and Japanese dance.

On the 7th, a ritual for the arrival of autumn will be held at 5pm, followed by a Japanese dance performance and an exhibition of Japanese flower arrangements.

On the 9th, there will be a ritual for the 3rd shogun of Kamakura at 10am, followed by tea services. Later there will be performance of wind instruments, followed by a Japanese harp concert. The exhibition of flower arrangements will also still be on display.
